Oh, this movie looks like FUN. I dug JGL in Mysterious Skin, and then loved him in Brick, and then absolutely adored him when he hosted Saturday Night Live and opened up with the “Make ‘Em Laugh” number from Singin’ in the Rain. And now, throwing scuzzball attitude in Hesher. I’d watch this anyway even if it wasn’t him in the title role, but I’m quite enjoying this departure from his usual impeccability.
Also: men in bands, the time has come to liberate yourselves from the prison of hair product and swiping your bangs sideways. Seriously, stop.
I have never seen this movie before. Up until a couple of months ago, I’d never seen Alien (EXCELLENT), Friday the 13th (meh), or The Road Warrior (insane), either. My GreenCine queue is currently full of gaps in my cultural knowledge – as an aspiring speculative writer, I feel like I should know all this stuff, and so far I’m loving all the trope dissections and plot predictions and generally just taking it all apart. All these movies that people have generally seen a long time ago, and I’m just seeing them for the first time which is kind of cool in its own way – we just got in The Hunger, which Stray hasn’t seen, and I’m all “Let’s wait until we can watch it with our full attention. Because this NOT Twilight.” (Of course not. It has The Deneuve in it.)
I’m recognizing so many other works in the Conan movies – Poison Elves, GWAR must surely have taken notes, and so that’s where that “lamentations of the women” line came from. Fab fantasy cheese, but I can’t stand Arnold Schwarzenegger. Repugnant. I’m getting around this by superimposing the much handsomer visage of Peter Steele onto his face, somebody who makes that loincloth much more enjoyable to behold.
Grace Jones, as always, was awesome, transcending the Batshit Crazy Warrior Woman dialogue and stupid little foxtail on her costume. I’ve seen it mentioned on the internet that she has an autobiography, but I can’t find it anywhere. Too bad, I’d love to read it.
